{"id":616,"date":"2014-08-04T13:05:43","date_gmt":"2014-08-04T13:05:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/liguriawine.com\/?page_id=616"},"modified":"2014-08-04T13:05:43","modified_gmt":"2014-08-04T13:05:43","slug":"cimixa","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/liguriawine.com\/index.php\/wines-of-liguria\/ligurian-grapes\/cimixa\/","title":{"rendered":"\u00c7imixa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">On the brink of extinction, but was rescued by Marco Baciagalupo, a pastry chef from Genoa, Liguria. \u00a0In the 1970&#8217;s, Marco gathered together about 500 vines that were purported to be\u00a0\u00c7imix\u00e0 and planted them all\u00a0together\u00a0iat the old abandoned vineyard of Cassottana, (which is now established as an experimental vineyard) with the aid of Lorenzo Corino, director of the Asti Experimental Institute for viticulture, the agronomist Silvia Dellepiane,\u00a0the Community of Montana Fontanabuona and the Cooperativa Agricola St. Columban. The\u00a0cooperative took over the job of caring for these vines in the 1990&#8217;s, and by 2003, the grape was included in the national register of varieties in Italy.\u00a0The last published agricultural census for Italy was carried out before \u00c7imix\u00e0 was added to the national register of varieties, so there currently is no figure on total plantings of the grape in Italy (though probably tiny).<\/p>\n<p>Their goal was\u00a0to expand plantings of this variety to a commercial level in the Genoese area, in particular around Chiavari. A <a href=\"http:\/\/prono.provincia.genova.it\/notizia.asp?IDNotizia=6256\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">conference<\/a> was held 21 April 2005, to monitor progress.<\/p>\n<p>In a study carried out in 2009\u00a0found that the\u00a0\u00c7imix\u00e0\/Scimisci\u00e0 of Liguria is the same as the\u00a0Frate Pelato, a grape is occasionally used in the blends of the <a title=\"Varieties of Cinque Terre\" href=\"https:\/\/liguriawine.com\/wines-of-liguria\/eastern-liguria\/cinque-terre\/varieties\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cinque Terre<\/a>. and the Genovese of Corsica, which\u00a0can be found in some Corsican wines, but rarely (if at all) as a varietal.<\/p>\n<p>The Corsican Genovese had been regarded as a local clone of the Bianchetta Genovese\/Albarola\u00a0or the Bosco of Liguria, but tests have shown that while the three grapes share some morphological similarities, Bosco and Albarola appear to be more closely related to one another than either is to \u00c7imix\u00e0.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0\u00c7imix\u00e0 (Genoese dialect) and Scimisci\u00e0 (Fontanina? dialect) are dialectical variants of one another, and both refer to bedbugs because the vine apparently has spots on it resembling bedbug bites.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">There are a handful of Ligurian producers making varietal wines from the grape, and nearly all of them use either the\u00a0\u00c7imix\u00e0 or the Scimisci\u00e0 name for their products.\u00a0Bisson chooses to use the\u00a0\u00c7imix\u00e0 name on their label, though the wine itself is called &#8220;L&#8217;Antico.&#8221; \u00a0Does Italian DOC allows for a 100%\u00a0\u00c7imix\u00e0 wine? L&#8217;Antico is bottled as an IGT.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">Tasting note May 2014: Bisson &#8216;L&#8217;Antico&#8217; 2012 DOC Portofino. 100%\u00a0\u00c7imixa. Wax, beeswax, round, fat weight, goodish acidity.
