In a study from 2009, of the grapes in Liguria, 51 varieties were identified, of which 36 proved to be unique to the region. Many varieties have links with other varieties in neighbouring regions and around the western Mediterranean. Local names help to identify how the grapes have moved from one region to another, and with Liguria being an important crossroads for both maritime travel and overland, a unique range of varieties have developed.
However, many varieties are also on the verge of extinction and work is being done to encourage the re-introduction of these lesser known varieties.
