Proceeding from west to east, the Cinque Terre domains have the same climate and the same exposure of the soil, but the soil is not the same. Monterosso The soil is determined by the presence of erratic boulders of sandstone and is permeable to water, therefore, dries easily. The roots, growing in a loose soil in close contact with the rock, shale, tending to acid, rich in mineral elements and, of course, well exposed to saline.

The climate of this region is mild because of the mountains which protect the area from cold northerly winds, allowing the sun’s heat to concentrate on exposure to the southwest. Springs are mild and rainy with typically first buds in March. Hot, dry summers with long sunny days promote the maturation of the tissues of the plant and the increase of sugars in the berries, with harvest in mid-September.
