Conference in Taggia May 2011

Held in the old monastery in medieval Taggia, this was a far cry from the modern beach resort of Alma di Taggia. The old town used to be a river port, its squares once lined with palazzo, beautiful churches and a large monastery. Local production included the famous Moscato di Taggia. Today it is known for its olive oil.

The conference was organised by local historian Alessandro Carassale bringing together historians and viticulturalists. Papers ranged from analysis of the medieval wine trade of Genoa, grape growing in the mountains, my paper on the history of wine in the French Alpes Maritimes to the DNA of Ligurian grapes and the recreation of the lost wine of Taggia.

In-between talks we strolled around the cloisters, meal times were displays of Ligurian specialities and local producers show-cased their wines.

We had various local specialties served at meal times, some made and served by people from the various villages. see Gastronomy
