From Michael Palij’s Winetraders catalogue:

Marco Nicolini [check name with Michael Palij] farms more than 20 ha of basil which helps fuel the world’s insatiable demand for pesto and also allows him to indulge his passion for sports cars and for fine wine. Having established that we had something in common I still remember my first journey (in the 911, of course) up the switchbacks to arrive at the plot of gnarled Vermentino that marks the entrance to the winery. At the moment it’s more building site than country home but Marco’s roots are here in the hills above La Spezia and he’s a determined supporter of its potential. It’s not a million miles up the coast from Carrara and the soil here is particularly stony, unrewarding, and calcareous. The 2009 Colli di Luni is new for this year and is delicious accompanying almost anything with fins. Don’t let the modest price fool you, this is a thrilling wine with high alcohol and a striking minerality. Winetraders catalogue.
Mare & Mosto 17th May 2015
No entry level wine. Harvests mid September to end October. Those who harvest earlier do so to obtain extra acidity.
Vigne Basse 2014. 70m above sea, brown stones. A tiny bit of Albarola used for extra freshness. Closed nose, creamy freshness, ripe peaches, creamy with peppery finish – from one night skin contact. Slightly salty on the finish with intense dried fruit.
Fosso di Corsano 2014 250-400m. Skin contact. Fennel seed on the nose. Dry but with sweet fruit, spice, herbal, dried fruit, sweet and salty. With age the fresh ‘pine’ character will become more resinous.
Vermentino Nero 2014 (Vermentino Nero’s parentage is white Vermentino x Pinot Noir x Gamay. Small to medium berries with thin skin) plus 5-10% Pollera. Mineral lean tannins. Firm. Long, fresh clean acidity. More austere. Will age 3-5 years. Wild berry fruit, bottled 10 days ago. Fermented in open topped barrels, MLF in large oak and then in concrete from February. Grape prone to oxidation.
Merla della Minera 2014 Toscana IGT. Cannaiolo and Massertta (named after the place Massa where the white marble comes from). Found these old original varieties in very old vineyards. Very rich, rich sun-ripened fruit with very firm tannins and acidity. Aged after February in large old oak.
